Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Review: Franks Back In Business (Season 8, Episode 7)

Tonight was one of the best usages of Dee in a long time. Her fake Canadian accent was hilarious, especially when she talked about seeing turds in Rick Moranis’ backyard, and it was one of the few time she was fully involved in a scheme and didn’t do a thing to screw it up. The whole episode was very well done by Kaitlin Olson.

Glenn Howerton’s performance was extremely similar to The Gang Buys A Boat. His talk about getting off tonight was reminiscent of his talks of the “implication” of having a lady out on the sea. However, he takes the insanity to a whole new level in this episode. When he gets up the resolve to bang the caddy, licking his lips as he unbuttons his pants, he enters into a new world. After all, the whole thing is about getting off by getting in someone else’s skin, a serial-killing sentiment if I’ve ever heard one.

One of the things that makes the Gang so funny, is their complete obsession with innovative business ideas. Everyone comes up with ideas that might make good businesses, but the Gang’s ideas are far kookier than what normal people would think of, and they also take the ideas much further, but as Dennis is upset about, never far enough. It seems they forget that they already own a business, a bar that never seems to have any customers, so maybe they should devote some more of their ideas to that.

The commercial by Mac and Charlie was excellent. It felt like a combination of Kitton Mittons and Paddy’s shotgun, but taking Dennis and Frank out of making the video made it all the more hilarious. Mac’s obsession with the male figure was clearly shown throughout, and Charlie made sure to include all the crow references he could. Though I’m not quite sure what the bird law is on crow eggs in drinks.

The part at the end with the finger in the bad was totally unnecessary, but another great Charlie moment. Instead of getting the fingerprint like Mac said, Charlie thought Mac wanted a finger tip. Why Mac would want a dead man’s fingerprint anyway is a complete mystery, but Charlie’s confusion, and the way he told the story of it, will have me chuckling for days.

There was also a great, not-so-subtle, political commentary on big business tonight. Charlie’s confusion about what it is Atwater does, like what they make, what they create, and Frank’s insistence that they don’t make anything except wealth, seemed like something more out of a South Park episode than Sunny. It was quite funny nonetheless.

Tonight was an excellent episode top to bottom, even though it deviated from the innovative set-ups that they’ve been using lately. All the characters provided great laughs, and the story wound together in a hilarious way, making for yet another successful episode from season 8.

Other Random Notes

• Dee’s desire to throw the Canadian money in the trash was a great touch.
• Is the 24-hour rule an actual thing for wallet’s found in bars?
• “Charlie can’t read!” “He’ll adapt.” Charlie took an extreme amount of notes for an illiterate man. I would’ve liked to see his notepad when it came to making the sushi dinner “tits.”
• “There’re too many minorities and women working here.”
• It was only seen for a brief moment, but the penis flier being back was an excellent touch.
• Mac’s American flag bodyguard shirt was epic.
• I’ve got my wallet ready for the day Fight Milk hits the shelves.
• There haven’t been this many Asian characters in one episode since the days of Frank’s crazy gambling in the basement of the bar.
• Mac as Vic Vinegar was great. I had nearly forgotten about his identity from the Honey & Vinegar days, but it was hilarious that was the identity he went to. “Vic Vinegar, bodyguard. I don’t shake, so don’t even try.”
