Joakim Noah Facts
Born in New York City in February 1985, Joakim moved to Paris with his family in 1988. He returned to New York City in 1998, about a decade later.During his time at the University of Florida, he won successive NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Men’s Division I Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, he was also named the NCAA ‘Final Four Most Outstanding Player’.He was picked 9th overall in the 1st round of the 2007 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. That year, he and 2 of his teammates from the University of Florida (Corey Brewer (selected 3rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks) and Al Horford (selected 7th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves)) became the highest-picked trio from the same college in a single edition of the NBA Draft in history. In 2010, with his mother, he co-founded the Noah’s Arc Foundation to help engage at-risk youth, particularly in Chicago, with positive self-expression through arts and sports. The foundation was later registered as a United Nations NGO (non-governmental organization). In 2015, the organization was granted special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).In February 2012, he recorded his first career ‘triple-double’ (a single-game performance by a player who accumulates a double-digit number in 3 of the following 5 statistical categories – points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots) with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. It was the first ‘triple-double’ recorded by a Chicago Bulls center since Artis Gilmore in 1977.In January 2013, when he was named as a reserve in the 2013 NBA ‘All-Star Game’, he became the Chicago Bulls‘ first center to have been featured in this annual exhibition game since Artis Gilmore in 1982.A month later, he recorded his third career ‘triple-double’ with 23 points, 21 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots in a 93–82 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. This tied a franchise record for blocks in a regular season game that was set by Artis Gilmore in 1977. Joakim also joined Hakeem Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shawn Bradley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Elvin Hayes as the only players to have recorded a ‘triple-double’ of at least 20-20-10 in points, rebounds, and blocked shots since blocked shots began being recorded.Between December 28, 2013, and February 1, 2014, he had an 18-game streak of 10 or more rebounds. That streak ended on February 4, 2014, against the Sacramento Kings, when he was ejected from the game after he had complained about a controversial foul call against him. He verbally abused the referees and was fined USD 15k for his conduct by the NBA.In February 2014, he recorded 13 assists in a 94–92 road win for the Chicago Bulls against the Toronto Raptors. This made him the first NBA center with 3 games of 10+ assists in a season since Brad Miller of the Sacramento Kings in the 2005–06 season.A month later, he recorded his 5th career ‘triple-double’ with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists in a 109–90 win over the New York Knicks. Joakim’s 14 assists in that game were the most ever by a Chicago Bulls center and the most by a center in the NBA since 1986.He had finished the month of March 2014 with 120 assists, the most by an NBA center since Wilt Chamberlain had 155 assists in March 1968.When he was named the ‘NBA Defensive Player of the Year’ in 2014, he became just the 2nd player from the Chicago Bulls to win that award, after Michael Jordan in the 1987–88 season. He also became the 1st Frenchman, just the 2nd European, and only the 4th international player to have clinched this award. In December 2015, in a game against the New York Knicks, he grabbed 10 rebounds, 6 of them offensive. This made him the Chicago Bulls‘ career leader in offensive boards, surpassing Horace Grant (1,888).In 2015, he was honored with the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, an annual NBA award that has been presented since 1975 to a player, coach, or staff member who has shown ‘outstanding service and dedication to the community’.In October 2021, the Chicago Bulls hosted a special function in his honor where he was named an ambassador of the team.Joakim has nicknamed himself ‘The African Viking’ to pay tribute to his mixed heritage.Featured Image by Joakim Noah / Instagram
