Joakim Noah is a French-American-Swedish former professional basketball player who represented the Chicago Bulls (2007–2016), the New York Knicks (2016–2018), the Memphis Grizzlies (2018–2019), and the Los Angeles Clippers (2020), as a center, in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was included in the annual NBA ‘All-Star Game’ in 2013 and 2014 and was named the ‘NBA Defensive Player of the Year’ in 2014. He was also included in the NBA ‘All-Defensive Second Team’ in 2011, the ‘All-NBA First Team’ in 2014, and in the NBA ‘All-Defensive First Team’ in 2013 and 2014. Although he was eligible for the French, American, and Swedish national teams, he represented France in international competitions. With the team, he won the ‘Silver’ medal in the 2011 edition of EuroBasket, the main international basketball competition contested quadrennially by the senior men’s national teams that are governed by FIBA Europe, the European zone within FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball Amateur). He announced his retirement from the sport in March 2021.

Joakim had attended the United Nations International School, a private international school in New York City. He later studied at the Poly Prep Country Day School, an independent, coeducational day school in Brooklyn, New York City; and The Lawrenceville School, a preparatory school for boarding and day students in Mercer County, New Jersey.

  • Born in New York City in February 1985, Joakim moved to Paris with his family in 1988. He returned to New York City in 1998, about a decade later.
  • During his time at the University of Florida, he won successive NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Men’s Division I Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, he was also named the NCAA ‘Final Four Most Outstanding Player’.
  • He was picked 9th overall in the 1st round of the 2007 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. That year, he and 2 of his teammates from the University of Florida (Corey Brewer (selected 3rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks) and Al Horford (selected 7th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves)) became the highest-picked trio from the same college in a single edition of the NBA Draft in history.
