Perhaps more than any other team, Tottenham Hotspur have given Manchester City real problems over the last few seasons.

Pep Guardiola’s side have lost each of their last four trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This weekend’s clash takes place at the Etihad Stadium, but Spurs have had some recent joy there too.

They stormed into a 2-0 lead at City’s ground last term, although the hosts fought back to win 4-2. In 2021/22, a magnificent Harry Kane performance helped Antonio Conte’s men to win 3-2.

The overall record over the last four years or so is in Tottenham’s favour. City have lost three of their last four meetings with the club from north London, and five of the last seven.

That will give Tottenham hope ahead of Sunday’s showdown, but they rightly start as underdogs against the defending champions.

There are several reasons for that. For starters, City have won 24 of their last 25 games in front of their own fans in all competitions. 

Liverpool denied them victory at the Etihad last weekend, drawing 1-1 thanks to a late Trent Alexander-Arnold equaliser, but City are generally formidable on familiar territory.

Guardiola’s men came from 2-0 down to beat RB Leipzig 3-2 in midweek, taking their overall home goal tally for the season to 26 in nine games.

Tottenham have also struggled of late, losing three matches on the bounce and several players to injury and suspension.

A draw would be an excellent result for Ange Postecoglou’s men, but City will fancy their chances of picking up a 10th win of the campaign.

Manchester City took their eye off the ball in the Champions League on Tuesday. 

A loss to RB Leipzig could have potentially knocked City off top spot in Group B and for a long time it looked like the reigning kings of the continent would indeed suffer defeat by their German opponents.

“It is not normal to concede four goals the way we did against Chelsea and today, it is the truth. That didn’t happen last season," Guardiola said afterwards. 

“We talked about it, it’s football, human beings, it happens, but we have to improve it. You have to get better, we were lucky today.”

City, usually so solid under Guardiola, have failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their last five outings in all competitions. In the Premier League, it is just one shut-out in seven games over the last couple of months.

Tottenham created plenty of chances against Aston Villa last weekend even without James Maddison, their creator-in-chief.

City should ultimately have too much quality for Spurs, but we fancy goals at both ends in this one.

Postecoglou has given Tottenham a new on-field identity. His three predecessors, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte, were often preoccupied with defence more than attack.

Spurs had their moments under Mourinho and Conte, but the fans soon fell out of love with their style of play.

Postecoglou’s bold, attack-minded approach is much more in tune with what the club’s supporters want to see from a Tottenham team.

It has not always paid dividends this term. For instance Spurs continued to play on the front foot even after going down to nine men against Chelsea, resulting in a 4-1 defeat.

But overall Tottenham are in a much better place than most would have expected a third of the way through the campaign.

Spurs will spend long periods of Sunday’s match out of possession, but they will still aim to defend high up the pitch and get bodies forward in attack.

All in all this promises to be an exciting, entertaining game with plenty of goals on the cards.

Jeremy Doku was instrumental in Manchester City’s comeback against RB Leipzig last time out.

Introduced in the 54th minute with his team 2-0 down, Doku was a constant thorn in Leipzig’s side for the remainder of the match.

The winger did not score a goal or provide an assist, but without his speed and dribbling City could easily have fallen to defeat.

Doku is likely to be back in the starting XI for the visit of Tottenham and we fancy his chances of making an impact against an opposition defence that will not be at full strength.

With the prolific Erling Haaland waiting in the middle, it is worth backing Doku to set up a goal this weekend.
