The Most Powerful Twitter Hashtags of 2015

Publish date: 2024-06-13

2015 came and went quicker than we’d all imagined but the impact that had been made on Twitter last year, and mostly by young people, was extremely impressing. Here are what we thought were the most powerful hashtags of 2015:

#ProjectNoControl
1D fans may have had a tough time last year, but they obviously didn’t let it stop them from slaying and after Zayn left the boys in March, the fandom came out of it stronger than ever. They took it upon themselves to do a fan release of the brilliant track from FOUR, ‘No Control’, in order to make sure the band were getting the credit they deserved, and particularly show how proud they were of Louis, who leads the song. It was a global success and the band themselves made sure the fans knew how amazing they thought it was. Check the track here if you haven’t already!

This is soooo incredible guys ! Another example of how good you are to us !! https://t.co/63w6sjMBNo

#LoveWins
This hashtag quickly started trending on 26th June, which eventually reached 6.2 million tweets within six hours due to the Supreme Court declaring that state-level bans on same-sex marriage were illegal. It was a joyous day which was celebrated all across social media, with Facebook adopting the rainbow profile picture and Twitter automatically adding a cute little rainbow heart emoji anytime someone tweeted #LoveWins.

Today is a big step in our march toward equality. Gay and lesbian couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else. #LoveWins

#TheDress
Black and blue? White and gold? Will anyone ever know??? Back in February the hashtag #TheDress was trending with, at one point, 670.000 people simultaneously viewing the photo. It was astonishing to see how quickly this dress escalated and went viral, up to the point where it practically broke the internet. So, what do you see?

#Action1D
Again the 1D fandom were slaying, but this time for the greater good of our generation. The majority of Twitter/Social Media fans got behind the boys’ campaign called ‘Action/1D’, which asked them to make videos or take a photo of the kind of world they wanted to live in. Due to their gigantic following, the 1D boys were then given the chance to show these videos to major world leaders to help achieve a better future for everyone.

A massive THANK YOU to @OneDirection and their amazing fans for getting involved with #action1D! pic.twitter.com/CAmhYbUo33

#BlackLivesMatter
2015 was an important year for the Black community, as they continued to fight for justice for themselves and others around them. This hashtag was one of many that were created during the year, but it is a perfect and beautiful expression for portraying their journey towards equality and how they continue to stand together in unity.

#PrayForParis
Again, a wonderful hashtag created after the Paris attacks in late 2015 in order to spread peace and love around social media, and to let the people of Paris know we were standing with them in solidarity. This followed on from the earlier hashtag of #JeSuisCharlie, which raised awareness of the killings at the ‘Charlie Hebdo’ magazine’s headquarters.
